Our vision is to enable a vibrant, innovative, and sustainable Indian cotton sector. Through our Cotton Agronomics program, we equip farmers with better practices, education, and community networks to boost yields, improve incomes, and strengthen the cotton ecosystem.

Water and Soil Conservation
Traditional bunds made from loose farm soil often collapse in heavy rain, causing runoff and loss of nutrient-rich topsoil.In drought-prone villages of Maharashtra, COTAAP planned reinforced bunds with strategically placed trenches and recharge pits based on the land’s natural contours. These structures retain topsoil, slow runoff, and channel rainwater into the ground, raising the water table and providing stored water for irrigation during dry months.
River Cleaning & Deepening
In Babhulgaon village in Marathwada, falling rainfall and depleted groundwater left borewells dry for most of the year. The nearby Dheku river had become a silted, debris-filled channel that could no longer store rainwater.
COTAAP restored the river through systematic cleaning and deepening of the riverbed. Today, the Dheku holds water beyond the monsoon, supporting irrigation and recharging groundwater for the village.
De-Risking Marginal Farmers
Advanced agronomic techniques & practices can feel risky for marginal farmets. COTAAP first pilots and validates new practices with progressive farmers, then scales proven methods to small land holders, thus reducing risk and building trust. This approach has been used to introduce several projects like High Density Planting Systems (HDPS), Bamboo Staking and so on in Chopda, Jalgaon district, increasing yields and farmer confidence.
Farmer Networking Platform
We have created Farmer Networking Platforms that connect farmers of all land sizes and income levels in a single collaborative space. These platforms provide peer support, a forum to share challenges, and access to expert advice in a trusted community environment.
Farmer Education
We conduct seminars, conferences, and training programs that promote a scientific, modern approach to cotton cultivation. These programmes help farmers adopt advanced practices, improve crop performance, and ultimately enhance quality of life.
Public - Private Partnerships
COTAAP facilitated Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) that combined state government support with private sector expertise and resources. These collaborations expanded extension services, improved input access, and strengthened support systems for cotton farmers.
Soil Testing
We offered soil testing services to help farmers understand soil health, nutrient status, and constraints. COTAAP also guided farmers in interpreting reports and adopting practical methods to improve soil quality over time.
Precision Input Management
COTAAP has promoted bio-fertilizers, bio-pesticides, and other eco-friendly inputs to optimize crop health and support more sustainable cotton production while keeping input costs under control.
Unlocking Higher Yields with Simple Techniques
Reducing Cotton Varieties
Our agronomy team helped farmers reduce variety numbers from about 250 to under 40, simplifying management and standardizing quality for better profitability.
Introducing Extra Long Staple Cotton (ELS)
By introducing Mahyco–Bahubali ELS cotton, COTAAP enabled farmers to earn a higher premium per quintal and reduce reliance on imported ELS cotton.
Disseminating BT Technology
In Chopda, about 90% of farmers adopted BT cotton within two years, boosting yields and pest resistance with COTAAP’s facilitation.
Reusing Non-BT CICR Seeds
With CICR, COTAAP demonstrated that seed from the ‘Suraj’ non-BT variety can be reused, reducing seed costs and improving long-term sustainability.

Why Cotton Promotion?
Cotton is losing market share to synthetic fibres despite unique benefits: natural, breathable, biodegradable, and suitable for all seasons. Every part of the cotton plant is used.
India ranks among the world’s top cotton producers, consumers, and exporters—making cotton vital for livelihoods and the national economy, while supporting a lower-impact fibre future.
Through our Cotton Promotion programs, we highlight the benefits of natural fibre cotton and encourage people to “Choose Cotton for Life.” Growing demand supports farmers’ livelihoods, strengthens the rural economy, and benefits the environment.
Our Work in Cotton Promotion
Cottonology School Contact Program
The Cottonology School Contact Program uses engaging audio-visual content and interactive sessions to teach students about cotton and conscious clothing choices. It is delivered on-ground in Mumbai and online across India.
World Cotton Day
COTAAP commemorates World Cotton Day on October 7 every year with a series of engaging activities to highlight cotton’s importance to our lives, economy, and environment.
- National Essay Competition: School students ages 10–13 from across India write essays on cotton-related themes, with enthusiastic participation each year.
- Radio Campaign: Awareness spots air on leading radio channels, promoting cotton’s value and celebrating World Cotton Day.
World Environment Day
COTAAP celebrates World Environment Day (June 5) with cotton-themed photography and slogan-writing competitions for schools across India, along with radio campaigns highlighting cotton’s role in environmental sustainability.
Mumbai Marathon
COTAAP participates in the Mumbai Marathon annually to fund Cotton Agronomics projects. Beyond fundraising, we provide daughters of rural cotton farmers an international platform to compete. These young athletes have achieved top positions in their race categories.
